Humanity has witnessed how pretension can scale the skies of Pandora and yet remain trapped in the ego-swamps of Hollywood. Avatar: The Way of Water presented itself as the definitive ecological epic, a love letter to nature that, ironically, was written with the ink of mass consumption and resource waste. Claqueta Ácida, with its sharp sarcasm knife, finds itself trapped between the greenwashing mist and the crude reality of a production that consumed tons of metal and energy, despite proclaiming to save the planet.

The production, guarded by the machinery of 20th Century studios, was immersed in a controversy worthy of a courtroom drama: how can a megablockbuster using over 900 tons of reusable water claim sustainability? The answer, according to the marketing executives themselves, is that intention counts more than execution. The irony, therefore, is that the film became the new symbol of "greenwashing" on the big screen, provoking a wave of criticism from activists, journalists, and even The Guardian itself.

An Alarming Journey to Absolute Boredom

The plot, which attempts to follow the tradition of a hero discovering an ancestral power under the waves, is as predictable as the announcement of a new iPhone. Sam Worthington, once the cybernetic hero of the first installment, repeats the same "I am the chosen one" formula without offering even a spark of originality. Zoe Saldaña, now converted into the worthy "Queen of Pandora", suffers from a script so flat that the dialogue feels like a list of ESG certification requirements. Each phrase seems to have been approved by a sustainability committee that prioritizes the inclusion of words like "eco", "responsible", and "resilient".

James Cameron's attempts to weave a narrative of cosmic love with nature are so forced that the audience begins to wonder if the film is not rather a long commercial for bottled water. "Nature does not need to be glorified, it just needs to survive", seems to be the whisper of critics within the room, while the screen fills with underwater sequences that, although visually impressive, are devoid of any dramatic tension. The climax, an epic battle between the Na'vi and the human invaders, dissolves into a corporate PowerPoint presentation-like choreography of CGI that seems more like a sales pitch than a real fight.

B-Movie Aesthetics and Pepsi-Cola

Visually, the film attempts to look like a masterpiece of spectacle, but the result resembles more the decoration of a 90s shopping mall. Russell Carpenter's cinematography bets on a palette of greens and blues that, in an attempt to be hypnotic, ends up reminding us of the colors of a soft drink ad. The special effects, although technically impeccable, lack the subtlety that characterizes great epics; instead, they offer an overload of particles that make "the viewer drown in a tide of glitter until losing the ability to breathe".

The production designers opted for a "eco-luxury sci-fi" aesthetic that, far from evoking the majesty of a real ecosystem, seems taken from an Ikea catalog with LED lights. The music, composed by Simon Franglen, attempts to be an echo of the original score, but ends up being a repetitive loop that sounds like a gym alarm. On screen, the CGI-created marine creatures swim with the grace of a green screen in a low-budget animation fair, and the audience is forced to accept the illusion while the film self-promotes as the "house of monsters" of the new era.

The Best

  • Impressive Visual Scale: The underwater shots of Pandora are, without a doubt, the film's highest point; the combination of lights and shadows under the water manages to create an oneiric atmosphere that, for a few minutes, eclipses the lack of narrative substance.
  • Kate Winslet's Performance: Despite her limited screen time, Winslet brings an aristocratic dignity to the role of the Na'vi warrior, reminding the audience that talent can still shine through the digital fog.
  • Sound Design: The creatures' roars and the coral's creaking are so immersive that they make the viewer feel the vibration in their seat, a small sensory victory.

The Worst

  • Empty Script: The story is reduced to a series of recycled clichés, without any depth or character, leaving the audience with the feeling of having seen an extended version of a detergent commercial.
  • Brazen Greenwashing: The contradiction between the supposed defense of the environment and the enormous carbon footprint of the production turns the film into a symbol of corporate hypocrisy.
  • Excessive CGI: Each scene is saturated with computer-generated effects, which diminishes the credibility of the universe and makes the audience wonder if they are watching a film or a technological product catalog.

The Verdict of Claqueta Ácida

In conclusion, Avatar: The Way of Water is a demonstration of how excessive ambition and lack of self-criticism can transform a potential ecological masterpiece into a monument of superficial pretension. The film offers a visually worthy experience of a theme park, but its content feels as empty as the pockets of the executives who financed it. The controversy it generates is not much more than that of any other blockbuster that boasts of saving the planet while consuming it. Therefore, with a score of 5.3, we award a polished mediocrity rating, worthy of the industry awards that prioritize form over substance. The lesson here is clear: true sustainability is not sold at the box office, but practiced behind the cameras.💀
