Caveat — A Wasteland of Nightmares

"Damian McCarthy’s Caveat is a descent into the blackest recesses of the human soul—a film so unrelentingly bleak it makes Eraserhead look like a Pixar short. Written by McCarthy himself, this cinematic nightmare plunges us into a world where reality and hallucination blur with sadistic precision. The story follows Isaac, a drifter with a conveniently spotty memory after some mysterious past trauma, who takes a job that sounds simple enough: babysit a woman with severe psychological issues in a derelict house on a godforsaken island in the middle of a lake so isolated it might as well be the moon. What could go wrong? In the hands of a lesser filmmaker, this premise would’ve devolved into a Greatest Hits of Jump Scares™, but McCarthy instead crafts a microscopic autopsy of isolation, paranoia, and the kind of claustrophobia that makes you want to claw your way out of your own skin just watching it.
