Lamb — The Beast That Consumes Us

"El digital celluloid burns, the screen sweats, and the smell of wet wool and rotting flesh fills the room as if the projector itself had decided to regurgitate the fluids of a cursed birth. Lamb, the debut film of Valdimar Jóhannsson, is not a movie: it's a pagan ritual filmed in high-resolution digital with the patience of an Icelandic shepherd and the cruelty of a bored Nordic god. We are faced with a film object that smells of damp earth, sour milk, and that strange mixture of tenderness and horror that only Icelanders seem capable of distilling, as if Bergman had decided to shoot an episode of Black Mirror on a farm from The Witch but with the icy parsimony of Scandinavian cinema. The question is not whether Lamb is good or bad, but whether we are prepared for cinema to remind us, with the delicacy of an axe to the neck, that nature is not wise, but sadistic, and that love, in its purest form, can be indistinguishable from absolute madness.
